How to Handle your lead acid CAR BATTERY

When you plan to handle a lead acid car battery by yourself,

This advice is aimed at an enterprise such as a small garage or Auto-centre who may handle a few batteries a week.

You will need to do some practical things to protect you from getting injured and hurt because the car battery contains lead and acid which can destroy clothing and burn the skin if they come in contact with your skin . Most car batteries are now sealed but many screw top batteries are still Flooded Lead Acid batteries and will produce gasses when discharging and re-charging which can explode!

When working with batteries, you need to have plenty of ventilation, remove your jewellery, wear protective eye-wear (safety glasses) and clothing, such as an acid proof smock , rubber gloves and exercise caution. Do not allow battery electrolyte to mix with salt water, this is especially relevant to boat owners. Even small quantities of this combination will produce Chlorine gas that can KILL you!

When handling battery acid, you always need to wear the correct eye, face and hand protection. Where ever batteries are filled and charged there must be a sink with a cold water tap in the area, also a 1st aid kit with eye wash facilities If the electrolyte is splashed into an eye, immediately force the eye open and flood it with clean, cool water for at least 15 minutes. Get prompt medical attention. If electrolyte is taken internally, drink large quantities of water or milk. DO NOT induce vomiting. Call a doctor or go to a hospital immediately.

Safety first when handling a car battery

Anyway, if you want to handle with these batteries, please pay attention to its user's instructions. To prevent you from getting hurt, you must always keep the above tips in mind and operate a good first aid policy.
