Caravan “BATTERY” Checking time again(Spring 2012)

Good Information about the Correct BATTERY Procedures.

Your caravan battery should always be charged and checked before the caravan season and before every long journey.

In fact Eric Roberts owner of bateriesontheweb in West Yorkshire, recommends that owners of trailers and caravans should remove the complete battery and take them to their favorite garage or auto centre and have them checked by a professional member of the team, this will ensure the the battery is correctly tested.
The batteries will be checked for level (providing the battery is not sealed), the battery casing will be checked for cracks or damage this is most important as unseen damage can become a nightmare scenario when going onto the caravan or trailer site and find out that you have a leaking battery.
It is also embarrassing when your lights and other electrics star to fail after the first hours use.
Most batteries these days for caravans are known as leisure batteries. These batteries are what’s known as a hybrid, and have been developed specifically for the caravan industry.
They are basically a cross breed between a starter battery and storage battery(AGM). You can buy these batteries online, they are sealed with small blow off vents, they are maintenance free batteries, this means that there will no need to top the battery up, also the batteries are fitted with calcium alloy plates, these plates do not loose liquid and are an aid to the none topping up factor.

The AGM battery can be used

The other type of battery that can be used is theAGM battery. These batteries are also sealed and do not contain any free flowing electrolyte, this means that the battery will discharge fully and then recover again when charged up. The downside of this type of battery is that they are much more expensive to buy and carry the same guarantee as the leisure battery.
The most popular size for the average size caravan is the 85amp battery or the 100amp battery and for the larger caravan the the 110amp is usually adequate . We at batteriesontheweb recommend the Lucas battery also Pennine King Power battery or the Diamond leisure batteries.
Happy caravanning for the upcoming season www.pellonautocentre.com
