Eric Roberts writes a small article about the way a car battery is made 

.The most popular type of battery known to most people is the standard car battery. This type of battery is a starter battery.

This type of battery is built to give the maximum amount of power to start the car and also allow the car to use electronics such a lighting and heating and for other smaller items. Batteries are charged by the alternator that is powered when the engine is running by a drive belt from the engine.

Most types of car batteries have five main components. The largest is the plastic casing that holds all the components, this is usually black in colour, but could be any colour the manufacturers desire. All batteries in recent times are re-cycled, these batteries are always black due to the process.

The next parts are the plates and these are made of lead and lead alloys. Plates are charged positive or negative . The more up to date maintenance free batteries, have plates made of calcium lead alloys. Pennine king power batteries are maintenance free batteries.

The next parts are plate separators and are usually a man made synthetic materials. These separate the lead alloy plates in the battery.

When all the parts are assembled inside the casing, sulphuric acid diluted with water to form the correct specific gravity and called “electrolyte”is added into the casing covering the plates. The casing is split into six compartments, each containing a bank of joined up positive and negative plates. The number of plates determine the capacity of the battery.

The cells are joined up by connectors and leave a negative at one end and a positive at the other end of the battery. These connectors are also made of lead alloys.

Finally the lid is fitted to the battery and the battery will receive a final charge before leaving the factory on route to the wholesalers, before fitting to your car.
