The car was originally bought for the wife of a wealthy cotton mill owner from Bradford in West Yorkshire and has been kept in “pristine condition”ever since.
The Wraith was built by Rolls Royce at their factory in Derby from between 1938 and 1939 and was supplied only as a chassis to “independent coach builders” who then created individual versions of the “great car”.
The car had coil spring suspension with leaf springs at the rear, it had a six cylinder overhead valve 4257cc engine with a four speed gearbox. Drum brakes were fitted and assisted by a “mechanical servo” driven by the engine. This car was equipped with an “hydraulic jacking system” which was operated from a lever under the passenger seat. Speed depended on the type of body that the car had fitted, but the average speed was probably about 80 to 90 mph. Tyres on the car were 17ins usually Dunlop tyres and the wheels were wire spoked.
In 1938 the complete touring car would have cost around £1700 to £2000 in its complete form, only “492” cars were built but due to the outbreak of the “second world war” production had to stop. This why some cars have later registration number plates. The car that we were working on is registered in 1946 because of the need to hold them in storage until after the war.
