Which BATTERY Terminal Do I Disconnect First ?

A simple but important battery fact worth knowing

It is a fact that most average motorists do not know which battery terminal to remove first, when they are changing their car battery. I bet that I am asked this question at least once a week. I will try to explain what to do in this short article and why the terminals should be removed in this order.
If you the motorist are going to do any work on your car that involves the electrical system, you must disconnect the cars battery first. To do this, loosen the nut and bolt that holds the battery terminal connector on the negative terminal the first, move the terminal from side to side to loosen it off, or if it is really stuck on , a good tip is to pore boiling water onto the post, this expands the terminal and is usually then easy to remove. Please be careful with boiling water, (health and safety and all that). Make sure that the cable and the terminal are moved away in a safe position. If you want to take the battery out, it will be safe to take off the positive connector, using the same method as the negative terminal..

Why remove negative then positive on your battery ?

If you remove the positive side of the battery first, then the negative side is still connected to the car. If you accidentally short out the positive battery terminal with say a spanner or other metal tool and then it touches anything else on the car, you will cause an electrical short. By disconnecting the negative first, you are cutting off the return path for the current. Now, if a tool drops on to either of the battery terminals, it doesn't matter if it touches part of the chassis or not - there's no continuous path for the electrical current.
Reconnecting your car battery. Always connect your positive terminal first, and the negative the last. When you put the negative connector on, there will be a small electric spark as it gets close and makes contact with the negative battery terminal. This quit normal, so do not be worried. Make sure the terminal nuts and bolts caps are well tightened up to finish off the job. I hope this makes sense to you, an excellent article can be read by clicking the link bellow.
