FIAMM BATTERIES and SAFT BATTERIES leading the race in Energy Storage Solutions.

FIAMM BATTERIES and SAFT BATTERIES

As a normal every day sort of guy, you don’t think about some of the everyday things that are just beneath the surface. I have started to take a greater interest in our environment, mainly to do with the link to my favourite subject and that is batteries and there recent rise in the development of the future to drive and store the energy for cars, our homes and businesses.
We all know about the development of different battery technologies in the auto trade, to drive cars without
Fiamm batteries
the use of fossil fuels, the latest and most common being Lithium-Ion batteries, but do we know about latest problems that are affecting our national power systems all across the World, including developed countries.
I started off doing some research about the use of batteries for storing energy in the everyday household, especially the householders that are” OFF GRID”, people with no mains electrical supply. This is because I happen to sell solar storage batteries online. As I was reading I noticed that the problem was now becoming more wide spread, in fact it was becoming a national issue. The fact is that we will somehow; have to store more power in electricity storage systems, which will include some battery storage. The electricity that is produced from solar energy via solar panels and wind-power are playing a larger role in the supply chain and are more difficult to store because of their supply fluctuations, in other words we get more electricity on a sunny or a windy day.
This makes it difficult for the power companies to regulate supply and demand and will need some sort of storage system to level out the production and consumption of the electricity. This means that electricity storage can iron out the peak troughs between supply and demand, as the popularity of large installations of wind turbines and Solar farms increases plus the added input of domestic installations.
A trade and industry group have been set up named the Electricity Storage Network that will help promote increased use of the electricity storage on grid connected applications. Here in the UK the minister for Universities and science, has introduced a package worth £600million of support of which £30million has been set aside for the scientists to set up a research and development department to look into feasible ways of storing large style grid storage. Other countries and companies are taking part in electricity storage projects across the World, in the race to solve this problem. Some battery companies are also at the forefront of developing electricity storage units for this very purpose.

Saft  batteries

One of the leading companies in the field of battery energy storage is Saft batteries with their head office in France. Safts range of battery storage systems will cater for both on-grid and off-grid storage systems using different battery technologies such as Ni-Cd, Ni-MH and Li-ion technologies. These battery systems will deliver high performance, long service life and low/zero maintenance requirements even in extreme conditions.

Indeed in 2013 Saft, built and delivered the first European large scale battery storage unit. The unit will installed in the Spanish island of Gran Canary and is capable of producing up to 1MW(megawatt) of power for up to three hours. This is exactly the thing that we will have to do in the future, the project is part of the STORE project (Storage Technologies of Reliable Energy).
This venture is to demonstrate the very thing that Governments are looking for and if this technology exists I wonder why the British government are spending tax payer’s money on R& D when this technology already

exists?
The project will balance out the added input of renewable energy from solar panels and wind-power with the demand for supply by storing a releasing the electricity at the appropriate times, thus optimising the grid infrastructure. Fiamm batteries

Fiamm Energy Storage Solutions S.p.A ;is an Italian battery company and they have developed similar type storage units, using sodium nickel chloride batteries. These units can supply the storage needs for the domestic market, up to large accumulation stations that can supply the grid services. As with Saft ; Fiamm say that because there is an ever increasing demand for renewable sources such as wind turbines and solar panels, so there will be a bigger challenge for the grid companies to balance out the difference between supply and demand. One of the only way of stabilising the grid system will be to store the electricity produced and then releasing it when the demand arises at peak periods. In hybrid power applications, battery energy storage can support a mixed combination of off-grid generation comprising various combinations of wind turbines, PV arrays, diesel-generators and fuel cells, pumped hydro, liquid air, pumped heat, compressed air and flywheels,.  Electricity storage projects are now in operation throughout the world.

Lithium-Ion golf batteries can Golfers Afford Them?

Lithium-Ion golf batteries

Though often overlooked, the battery is one of the greatest inventions in all time. In today’s world, we use batteries to power our accessories and devices such as phones, controllers, and children toys. Battery sales in the United States alone usually amount to almost fifty billion dollars a year, a number that grows annually Lithium-ion batteries in particular are becoming more and more popular because of their efficiency and power. If you are interested in lithium-ion batteries be sure to check out this article.
Lithium-Ion batteries produced by Johnson Controls
by more than five percent per year.

To begin, you should know how batteries work.

Batteries are in essence, a collection of several devices that includes electrochemical cells. Electrochemical cells have the ability to transform chemical energy into electrical energy which then can be sued to power many devices. Primary batteries are the most common form of battery. They contain enough a chemical energy to power a device for a set time, but cannot be recharged. . In contrast, rechargeable batteries can be recharged and used over and over.
Lithium-ion batteries are among the best types of batteries. They last longer than other batteries. They also charge faster, saving your valuable time and are friendlier to the environment than most other batteries.
Lithium Ion batteries are especially used golf cat batteries.
Golf carts require strong, efficient batteries that will work for several years. Lithium ion batteries fill all of these requirements. They can be used for STAR CARS, Club cars, and GEM cars. Many companies also offer a warranty on lithium-ion batteries, normally around 5 years. Many Lithium ion batteries for golf carts are often much lighter than their counterparts. This is important because light batteries allow your cart to man oeuvre better. They also do not weight your cart down.
The voltage and amp hours of the battery vary with the type of cart. The voltage can vary anywhere from 36 to 46 volts. The amp hours can vary from 40 to 100 amps, though most lithium ion golf batteries are 100 Amp hours. However most of these batteries are around seven inches long, six inches wide, and are seven inches tall. Such batteries also offer an automatic battery management system. This is a system that is included in the inside of the battery. It helps balance your cells without any intervention needed and can cut off power from terminals if it detects high or low voltage or short circuits
.

I hope you enjoyed this article about Lithium-Ion golf batteries

as they are growing in use we are beginning to learn more and more about the Lithium technology and the batteries ups and downs. One of the main aims of the Lithium-Ion battery is to lower the price. They are of course made from a very precious metal, the lithium which is only found in a couple of locations in the World, China and Chile. So the price of these batteries at the moment is extremely high and the products that use them are more expensive and out of reach to some consumers. Who knows in a couple of years we may be using a different type of battery. Battery development is moving on at a rapid pace, so who knows what’s round the corner? Watch this space?

Types of Batteries for Solar Power Storage

Different types of Batteries for your Solar Power Storage

As we probably all know the storage of solar energy will become more and more of a factor in the coming years ahead as more and more consumers realize the savings that are to be made by investing in solar panels, and it thought that the photovoltaic storage systems are going to reach very high levels of demand.
Europe’s largest country, Germany is expecting that the capacity from solar energy will increase from eight megawatts to a massive 4900 megawatts from now (2014) to 2017. This will also include a storage system with an estimated lifespan of about 20 years.
This 20 years lifespan also includes the ability to be able to store any excess solar power in a battery storage system. This is for when the sun is not shining and the solar panels are not putting
in any power to the system, then the backup batteries that have stored the energy will be able to supply the stored power to the household.
The traditional batteries that are used at present are the old favorites, lead acid batteries, AGM batteries (absorbed glass matting), and GEL sealed batteries, golf cart batteries which are the same as the AGM and GEL and can also be classed as deep cycle batteries. These batteries are all priced differently and in my opinion you pay for what you get. An excellent web site to explain each type of battery is…http://www.freesunpower.com/batteries.php
The new kid on the block is the Lithium-Ion batteries that are now been used by many solar panels manufacturers. In fact I have noticed that they are now making a complete unit which includes an inverter and a lithium battery as an integral part of the package. The Lithium batteries are usually more expensive but are promised to have a longer life span than the lead acid battery types, although at the moment I do not think that this has been proven.
The most popular types used in the USA are the deep cycle batteries used at the moment as leisure batteries and marine batteries on canal boats many other types of water craft. These types of batteries are able to take a large discharge and then recover when being charged back up, either by solar panels or another type of charging system. Special types of these batteries have now been developed by the large battery manufacturers. Trojan batteries now make a battery that is specific to storing solar energy and wind power. This type of battery is also used in backup systems for large installations such as hospitals where a backup system is needed in case of a mains power outage.
These types of batteries are the more expensive ones amongst the lead acid type batteries, but they are cheaper than the Lithium batteries. But I guess you get what you pay for, because a lead acid type battery will start to lose its capacity after about 3000 cycles of being charged and discharged, where as a lithium-Ion battery is capable of completing 7000 full cycles.

How does the Lithium-Ion battery work for solar power storage?

The development of the Li-Ion battery, has not yet been finalised, and at the moment the battery industry are working on development of a more robust material, for a higher performance electrode. Today’s Li-Ion batteries are using a graphite material for the anode and lithium metal for the anode, this serves as a chemical reactant for the graphite. It is expected though to use a newer material for the anodes, made from lithium-titanium. This change will bring down the price of these batteries to the level of the lead acid batteries, but this is in the future and at the moment the deep cycle AGM batteries are the favorite choice for the majority of solar power storage units, whether large or small.
